As underwhelming as last weekend was, and it was SERIOUSLY underwhelming, it saddens me a bit that we’ve reached the point where both of the films opening this weekend are being released in 3D. 3D used to be a format that was special and only used specifically for films made to be seen in 3D. However, with the amount of money being spent overseas by film goers we’re being inundated with films that are being converted to 3D just to make the extra money at the box office. Although I’ve said many times that I do appreciate animated films in 3D, it doesn’t change the fact that far too many films are being released this way.

The first of this week’s new releases is the re-release of the 2003 Pixar hit Finding Nemo, only this time in 3D. I will admit that I’m looking forward to seeing how beautiful the under water scenes look in the 3D format. Additionally this is a bit of a sentimental film for me. As my wife was in labor with our first child, this was the movie she chose to watch. My son is quite aware of this, and as soon as the announcement was made that this was coming out he made sure we knew he wanted to go; We’ll be seeing it on Saturday.

The second new release for the weekend is Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth film in the Resident Evil franchise, and the third directed by Paul W.S. Anderson the husband Milla Jovovich, the film’s stars. The last three films in the franchise were released in September and have opened in the $23M range and have gone on to gross $50M+. I’ve never seen any of the films in the franchise, but I’d be surprised if this one didn’t open around the same and end its run around that same $50M-$60M mark.
