Box Office Predictions (5/24 – 5/27/13)

Memorial Day weekend has proven in the last couple of years to be a prime spot in the release schedule. In 2011 The Hangover Part II opened to over $135 million and Kung Fu Panda 2 totaled around $67 million. Last year Men in Black III opened pretty decently with about $69 million; not too bad for a long overdue third film. I am convinced that Memorial Day weekend 2013 is going to be big with 3 tent-pole films opening. The bigger question is who will stand out among the competition, and how big will the weekend end up being.

Pixar Looks to Bounce Back with Brave

written by Bill Bonfanti

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 22-24

There are three new films opening in wide release this weekend:  Disney/Pixar releases their new animated adventure film Brave which should put them back on track after last summer’s disappointing Cars 2, 20th Century Fox adds a horror twist to our nation’s history with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Steve Carell and Keira Knightley try to ring some laughs out of Armageddon in romantic comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World from Focus Features. Brave will easily take the top spot and should open in usual Pixar fashion, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is going to have its work cut out for it.  The film will have a tough time pulling in any one unfamiliar with the source material and will likely be the next big casualty of the summer box office race.  Seeking a Friend for the End of the World may work as good counterprogramming to the big films currently in theatres, but it is doubtful the film will have a big opening weekend.  It looks to be more of a possible sleeper hit.    Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $141.7 million over the weekend, down about 13.9% from last year when Cars 2 from Disney/Pixar and Sony’s Bad Teacher led the overall Top 10 to a total of $164.5 million.

84th Academy Awards Predictions

I love the Oscars!! Last year, I, along with a number of other lucky individuals, was selected to sit alongside the red carpet during the 83rd Academy Awards. It felt like I had hit the lottery! And so, it was on February 24, 2011 that I made my inaugural trip across the country to California, along with my mom for the experience of a lifetime. I’m planning to write an article about the experience, so I’ll leave it at that; but it’s one of the highlights of my life, and I’m happy to have gotten to experience it with mom.

Anyway, here’s my (Joe) picks for this year’s winners:
